Staining is a common method to add color or enhance the natural appearance of wood, concrete, or other materials. It can bring out the grain in wood or give surfaces a richer look. Here’s a quick rundown of the staining process:

1. Preparation: Start by sanding the surface to ensure it's smooth, clean, and free of old finishes or imperfections. We use Festool dustless sanders for prepping surfaces without creating a mess, making sure to use the right sander (power wise and orbital wise) and right sanding papers(material and grit)

2. Choosing Stain Type: Select the right type of stain (oil-based, water-based, gel, etc.) for your project. Oil-based stains tend to penetrate deeper and offer longer-lasting color, while water-based stains dry faster and are easier to clean up. Our stain samples are made at our local stores and we strive to present at least two different samples to customer.

3. Applying Stain: Apply the stain evenly with a brush, cloth, or pad, and let it sit for a few minutes (follow the stain manufacturer’s recommendations). Wipe off any excess with a clean cloth to avoid blotchy patches.

4. Drying and Finishing: Let the stain dry completely. Afterward, apply a clear topcoat (like polyurethane or lacquer) for added protection and to seal the color in place. Topcoats come in different sheens to better match with floors or other surroundings.

Wood Staining In Niagara Falls

How often should my deck be re-stained?

Keeping your deck looking great takes a little upkeep, and re-staining it every few years is key. How often you’ll need to do it depends on a few things:

  • Weather & Sun Exposure – Direct sunlight dries out stain quickly, while rain and moisture can cause the wood to absorb water, leading to cracks when temperatures drop. Over time, these cycles weaken your deck.

  • Foot Traffic – Daily use naturally wears down stain, especially as dirt and debris get ground into the surface like sandpaper.

Signs It’s Time to Re-Stain

Deck stain typically lasts three to four years, but if you want to keep it looking fresh, consider adding a new coat after two years. Just don’t go overboard—too many layers can build up and cause issues. Once you hit the four-year mark, it’s best to strip the old stain and apply two fresh coats to strengthen and revitalize the wood.

Not sure if your deck needs a refresh? Try the water test—if water soaks into the wood instead of beading up, it’s time for a new coat of stain!
